Our Foundation

The 168-year-old Firm, Little & Co. is one of the oldest Firms of Advocates and Solicitors in India. Though based in Mumbai, the Firm is well-known across India and worldwide for its legal expertise and services.

Little & Co. was established in 1856 under the able guidance of Mr. John Pares Bickersteth and was the first to be registered under the Indian Partnership Act, 1932. The Firm has had the honour of representing the East India Company, the Secretary of State for India, the Government of Bombay Presidency and its successors and finally, the State of Maharashtra till 1974.

Legacy

The Firm has acted as Solicitors to the Great Indian Peninsula Railway and continued to act for it till its merger with the Central Railway. The incorporation of the Tata Iron and Steel Company was done with the assistance of the Firm and its then partner Mr. T.C.B. Acworth signed the company’s original Memorandum of Association.

Mr. Charles Grundy, the last British Senior Partner was the only expatriate British lawyer practising law in India, after independence. The Firm combines the heritage of the best practices along with the present-day legal expectations, to bring clientele the most efficient and practical advice in the most competent and organised manner.

Kakasaheb Dixit (1864-1926) “Mr. Hari Sitaram, alias Kakasaheb Dixit, was born in 1864 into a Brahmin family at Khandwa. His primary education was completed at Khandwa and his secondary education at Nagpur. He came to Bombay for his higher education and studied first in Wilson College and then in Elphinstone College. After graduation in 1883, he passed his LL.B. and the solicitor’s examination, and then worked in the firm of the Government Solicitors, Messrs Little & Co. Then after sometime, he started a solicitors’ firm of his own.”
